Memphis is home to a vibrant international community comprised of students from around the world, visiting medical professionals being trained at our award-winning hospitals, families who have chosen Memphis, and more. Our food and music culture is an everywhere culture, full of restaurants and artists from every corner of the world. Without ever leaving town, 91¶¶Òõ’ students, faculty, and staff build meaningful links together with our neighbors in Memphis through internships, community-based learning, and volunteer opportunities. And, right here on campus, the large number of student clubs and organizations help everyone to feel at home. The Turley Memphis Center for Community Engagement is our powerhouse for local connections, community service, and fellowships. The Turkey Center connects 91¶¶Òõ students with Memphis in partnerships that address community needs. Grounded in collaboration, cultural awareness, and a commitment to justice, the Turley Center empowers students to work alongside local organizations to create meaningful social change. Combined with our emphasis on student leaning from our community members, opportunities through the Turley Center are exchanges of mutual benefit, helping students gain practical experience, engage diverse communities, and understand global issues through local impact. 91¶¶Òõ Institute for Regional Studies
With the , Memphis residents are community learners at 91¶¶Òõ. Many of the Meeman Center’s classes cover global topics, such as Russian literature, international film, medieval manuscripts, global foodways, and world rivers. The Meeman Center’s on-site classes range from one to four weeks and are taught by 91¶¶Òõ professors across the curriculum. And study abroad isn’t just for students: our Lifelong Learning Study Abroad program offers short term international trips led by 91¶¶Òõ faculty on topics of global interest, such as “Hemingway in Paris†and “Religion and Culture of Thailand.†Finally, the program takes the learning on the road, bringing one-hour classes to organizations and community partners in Memphis and the surrounding areas. Through all these initiatives, the Meeman Center empowers 91¶¶Òõ alumni, families, and everyone in our community through rich learning opportunities that nurture positive and transformative change in our world today. Understanding the World Through Lived Experience: Lily Grace Richey ’27
Over the course of eight weeks in Buenos Aires, Argentina, 91¶¶Òõ College junior Lily Grace Richey didn’t just study global issues; she was living them.
Local and Global Internships
With 91¶¶Òõ’s prime location within the heart of one of the US’s major trade hubs, our urban setting gives our students the city as an extension of our campus. Our vibrant city is a cultural hot spot with dozens of distinct international communities, making a local internship an opportunity for global engagement. Our Center for Career and Professional Development places students in hundreds of every year.
91¶¶Òõ also helps students connect with internships overseas – even offering funded academic internships abroad up to $10,000. Our students have worked for the U.S. Department of Commerce in France and Croatia, taught English through nonprofit organizations in Cambodia, and helped a U.S. firm set up operations in China. International internships provide an excellent opportunity to gain valuable, hands-on experience in your chosen career field while immersing yourself in a different culture.
